The last two months of the year are symbolically the season of giving. Among the shopping and revelry, it is also a great time to support and think about others who may be less fortunate. During this upcoming holiday season, think about volunteering for a local charity or donating time or money to organizations that help others. Here are just a few ideas to help spread some holiday cheer.
Local Food Banks
It is so easy to donate food to local food banks. Many grocery and retail outlets have food barrels in their lobbies to accept donations of non-perishable food. My local grocery store also offers the opportunity to buy a bag of groceries for only $10. The store will fill the bag and deliver the food for you. Of course, cash donations are always welcome. Every $1 donated can provide two meals. The credit union has long been a supporter of the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. Our employees raise funds through our Jeans for Beans and Candygram programs. Since 2002, we have donated more than $275,000 to this worthy organization.
In addition to donations, there are many volunteer opportunities. The hours and locations are flexible. You can volunteer as a family to bag and distribute food at local warehouses or program sites. I encourage you to find a food bank near you.
Many local shelters are in need of blankets, gloves, socks, hats, and coats. Similar to the food bank, there are often collection barrels at a variety of locations where you live. One Warm Coat is a charity that I like to support. A simple Google search will help you find an organization near you.
Adopt a family
Use some of your family’s designated holiday money to buy or make gifts for another family in need. Many local organizations, religious groups and schools provide opportunities to help you sponsor a family in your area.
Visit the Elderly
Spend time with the elderly, especially those who are homebound or in assisted living. Help an elderly neighbor with Christmas decorations, grocery shopping, yard maintenance — or simply spend some time with them.
